After several years, the rosarie garden has re-opened to the public and has been planted with a wide variety of plants. One of the largest has been the rosarie, located behind the nursery and wooden barn. The horticulturists have also been busy with new planting projects. The gardeners have been busy planting annual flowers to continue the cheerful floral display until frost and have integrated containers of plantings into the gardens for extra color. A new bench has been placed in the cottage garden and cozy nooks await to hide out from the sun. Now that the warmer weather is here to stay for the next few months, the riot of spring blossoms have faded and the gardens are lush with green foliage. Today marks the official beginning of summer, the Summer Solstice. The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside.” “It was June, and the world smelled of roses. For up-to-date information on park closures and events, please visit the website. With the growing season coming to a close, please be mindful that the annual wildlife management program will be in effect with several closures in December and January for firearm hunts. We hope that you enjoyed visiting the Willowwood Arboretum this year and will come back to visit again! Seasonal fruits are also appearing in the garden such as Ilex verticillata ‘Winter Gold’. A staff favorite, Tricyrtis formosana ‘Amythestina’ is also in bloom around the large wooden barn closest to the main house. There are also Anemone throughout the garden such as Anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’ in Pan’s Garden. These include asters such as Aster tataricus ‘Jindai’ and Aster oblongifolius ‘October Skies’ which are both in bloom in the cottage garden. However, several late-season bloomers haven’t been discouraged by the cold weather. Overnight frosts have already hit the gardens this month and sent the gardeners for their pruners and shovels to remove spent plants from the gardens. As always, nature’s timing is on mother nature’s schedule. Meanwhile, a pear tree near the lilac collection in highland park turned a bold orange this week just in time for Halloween. The Katsura have already dropped their sweet, yellow leaves but the Ginkgo has recently turned colors to a summery yellow. The native maples changed colors early and have lost most of their leaves while the Japanese maples only began to change colors this week. Fall foliage can be tricky to time at Willowwood since different types of trees have different timing. Some favorites are the bright yellow Acer ‘Waterfall’ near the small waterfall in the Cypress pool, the Acer palmatum ‘Ornatum’ which was planted by Robert Tubbs in 1910, and the intensely red Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ across from the Metasequoia. This weekend will be a great time to enjoy fall color since the Japanese maples are finally reaching their peak. We were worried that the drought this summer would cause the plants to turn brown rather than showcase their usual bright colors but the significant rain in the last two months has helped revive the plants for a brilliant display. While no festive events are scheduled at the arboretum this weekend, visitors are encouraged to come visit to enjoy the orange leaves, natural spider webs, and enjoy the trails while covered in early morning fog for some spooky fun! The only animal we've notice that is attracted to it is Homo sapiens, so you'll want to protect your plant from pesky neighbors with shovels. With Halloween just around the corner this Monday, this weekend kicks off the festivities for families throughout the state. Light shade is ideal, but autumn fern also can tolerate a couple of hours of early morning sun when the temperatures are cool.Īutumn fern is quite deer resistant, so is a great choice in areas with high deer pressure. Dryopteris erythrosora typically only produces one growth flush per year, so never remove the foliage during the growing season, or there is a good chance your plant will die.ĭryopteris erythrosora prefers rich, evenly moist soil, but also has reasonably good drought tolerance. Do not remove the foliage any earlier, since it helps keep the ground cool and the new growth from sprouting too early. Usually the evergreen foliage gets tattered overwinter, and the ornamental potential of the plant is diminished when the old foliage isn't removed. The only maintenance we recommend for Brilliance Autumn fern is to cut the old foliage to the ground in spring just prior to the emergence of the new leaves. Autumn fern is a very easy-to-grow, deer-resistant fern making a 2' wide clump that is tolerant of a wide range of garden conditions, including extreme drought once established. Frankly, all autumn ferns have great color when the new fronds emerge from the evergreen clump, so this is really something special. Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' is a selected form of autumn fern that has brighter red new growth than what is typically seen with spore-grown plants. Thanks and sorry for the extensive questions. As far as I understand, the general entropy of a random variable $X$ should be the mean amount of self-information that every state of a random variable has.įor instance, if we have a variable with 4 states, $$ be approximated by an estimation of the probability based on the result of the experiments resulting from the execution of that random variable?.In that case, any amount of self-information for each state $v$ will give us the number of bits needed to efficiently transmit that state, under the assumption that, since all the states have the same probability, we should not "prioritize" one over the others.īut I do not understand how this holds for a random variable with a non-uniform probability distribution: why should $h(v) = -log_2 P(v)$ be the number of bits needed for exactly that state $v$ ? pA A / A.sum () Shannon2 -np.sum (pAnp.log2 (pA)) (2) Your probability distribution is continuous. Then you have to translate what appear to be relative frequencies to probabilities. (1) Your probability distribution is discrete. I do understand this when we are talking about variables with following a uniform probability distribution. There are essentially two cases and it is not clear from your sample which one applies here. I have read somewhere that given a random variable and considering the self-information of its states, any self-information amount will give us the minimal number of bits needed to encode the states. We define the amount of self information of a certain state of a random variable as: $h(v) = -log_2 P(v)$.Īs far I understand, Shannon arrived at this definition because it respected some intuitive properties (for instance, we want that states with the highest probability to give the least amount of information etc.).Programmers deal with a particular interpretation of entropy called programming complexity: learn more at our cyclomatic complexity calculator.I would like some clarifications on two points of Shannon's definition of entropy for a random variable and his notion of self-information of a state of the random variable. I understand that some, including the great Thomas Cover, prefer to define entropy, for pedagogical purposes. It reviews the axiomatic foundation upon which the notion of entropy is extracted. A logarithm to the basis of 2 is used here as the information is assumed to be coded. (4.4.6) H S h a n n o n ( a) j P ( a j) log 2 P ( a j). For any discrete random number that can take values a j with probabilities P ( a j), the Shannon entropy is defined as. I highly recommend reading chapter 2 of 'Information Theory' by Robert B. The concept of entropy has also been introduced into information theory. From an ecological point of view, it is best if the terrain is species-differentiated. \begingroup Actually, the Shannon's definition of entropy is not intuitive. The higher the entropy of your password, the harder it is to crack.Įcologists use entropy as a diversity measure. The concept of information entropy was introduced by Claude Shannon in his 1948 paper A Mathematical Theory of Communication,23 and is also referred to as. It takes into account the number of characters in your password and the pool of unique characters you can choose from (e.g., 26 lowercase characters, 36 alphanumeric characters). It's a measurement of how random a password is. You may also come across the phrase ' password entropy'. This index, which describes the probability of. In information theory, the entropy symbol is usually the capital Greek letter for ' eta' - H. Based on the local Shannon entropy concept in information theory, a new measure of aromaticity is introduced. It's said to have been chosen by Clausius in honor of Sadi Carnot (the father of thermodynamics). In physics and chemistry, the entropy symbol is a capital S. Before, it was known as "equivalence-value". It comes from the Greek "en-" (inside) and "trope" (transformation). The term "entropy" was first introduced by Rudolf Clausius in 1865. Know you know how to calculate Shannon entropy on your own! Keep reading to find out some facts about entropy! It was only when the remains of 15-year-old Jessica Roach were found in late 1993 that Larry finally came under suspicion. According to TheCinemaholic, authorities believe that he may be responsible for at least 40 disappearances and possible murders of young women that took place during this time. And it also reports that Larry is the suspect in more serious crimes from that time – including the abduction of two young girls in Michigan and Indiana who went missing when Larry was just 18 years old, and whose bodies have never been found.Īs he grew up, Larry became fascinated with Civil War and Revolutionary War reenactments, and between 19 travelled across the Midwest to attend and participate in them. The Radford University document also reveals that, as a teenager, Larry was suspected of committing acts of arson, vandalism and various petty crimes in his hometown of Wabash. According to a research paper written by the psychology department of Radford University in Virginia, Larry was antisocial in school, had a low IQ and was teased for being slower than other children, and also for having a speech impediment.Īs Black Bird depicts, Larry – along with his brother Gary, although the series doesn't show this – regularly helped his father Robert Hall dig graves when he was a child, before taking a job as a janitor after leaving school. The real Larry DeWayne Hall was born on Decemin Wabash, Indiana, along with his twin brother Gary. Much of what appears on screen is true, but there is more to the story of Larry Hall than is told in the series. Larry's confession and description of the abduction and murder of Jessica Roach, that was a day where I think we both felt it was difficult to shed the skin of it afterward, because of the reality of it and the knowledge that it really happened." "It's not like you become so lost in the part that you don't know who you are, but being unable to shed the energy of something. "I’m quite good at resetting myself, I think, but there were two occasions where I didn’t feel particularly good afterward," Egerton told the Hollywood Reporter. Hauser's co-star Egerton has spoken about how deeply affecting filming the show was, with the knowledge that its story was based on real events. Of course, the most interesting character in Black Bird is Larry Hall himself (in part thanks to Hauser's mesmerisingly creepy performance), and the series weaves in his story – including childhood flashbacks – as Jimmy gets to know him. The six-episode series follows Jimmy as he takes the FBI deal and attempts to befriend Larry, and also focuses on a pair of law enforcement agents (Greg Kinnear and Sepideh Moafi) as they attempt to uncover more evidence of Larry’s crimes. He organizes them into the Dendarii mercenaries and takes on a new persona, that of Admiral Miles Naismith, commander of the mercenaries. Feeling despondent and shamed by his physical disabilities, he leaves Barrayar and wanders, eventually acquiring a group of followers. He applies to the Barrayan military academy, but breaks both legs attempting to complete the obstacle course. He spent his childhood in casts since he insists on trying to be the man he thinks his father wants him to be. Poisoned in utero during an assassination attempt on his parents, Miles has extremely brittle bones that break with very little force. Lois McMaster Bujold’s second novel, written in 1984, The Warrior’s Apprentice, introduced her quirky, dwarf-like hero, Miles Naismith Vorkosigan, the son of Cordelia and Aral. She flees to Barrayar and marries Lord Vorkosigan, third in line to the throne. Aral asks her repeatedly to marry him, but she consistently refuses until she finds that she cannot go home again. The novel takes them through battles and imprisonment, torture and disgrace. During their shared ordeal, they are drawn to each other. Cordelia, who comes from the advanced civilization, is marooned on the unexplored planet with Vorkosigan, a product of an archaic aristocracy. The two are enemies in a war instigated by a dying emperor of Barrayar, where a feudalistic society, isolated from the galactic milieu for 500 years, has been abruptly cast back into the modern, technologically advanced culture by the discovery of a nearby wormhole. The story brings together Cordelia Naismith, captain of a small Betan starship, engaged in exploring a newly discovered planet, and Captain Lord Aral Vorkosigan, captain of a Brarrayan starship. She wrote her first novel, Shards of Honor, in 1983 and it was published in 1985. One of her earliest works, a short story, was about a single mother who puts her children into suspended animation. She started writing seriously in 1983, while working and struggling as a single mother with two young children on a very limited income. She has credited them with teaching her about birth and growth and parenthood. The marriage failed, ending in divorce, but she had two children, Anne and Paul. After college she worked as a pharmacy technician for six years until she married. She was able to participate in a six week program in East Africa, an experience that supplied her with scenery and ecology for her first novels. In college at Ohio State University Lois initially studied English, but then became interested in biology. While still in high school, she had the opportunity to spend a summer hitchhiking through Europe with her older brother, an adventure that produced many ideas for writing. She started writing in Junior High School and collaborated with a friend on a story all through high school. Lois picked them up and was very quickly hooked. He was also an avid science fiction fan and frequently bought paperbacks and had subscriptions to several SF magazines. Robert Charles McMaster was very well known in the scientific community, editor of the most important text in the field of welding engineering. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1949, she became a voracious reader as a child, influenced by her father, an engineering professor at Ohio State University. Then assign them the task of creating a time machine that will be opened in exactly 100 years from now by future students at your school. Depending on their age, you may need to explain the basic tenets of both perspectives. Divide students into two groups and informally label them liberals or conservatives. The goal here is to understand the sheer power that media has on our psyche, well-being, goals, and outlook on life. Ask how it might affect some of their peers, especially those who don’t fit certain stereotypes deemed most desirable by messages from media. Are these commercials inclusive in their portrayal of individuals of different races, ethnicities, genders, body types, and sexual orientation? Do they tend to elevate certain definitions of beauty, fitness, health, and celebrity/influencer culture while de-emphasizing others? Ask students how it affects them as viewers, both in their thoughts as well as in how they try to look and act. Assign groups of students to one of these categories, and task them with identifying five commercials from YouTube that are representative of each theme. Have students analyze how the media affects their perceptions of beauty, fitness, health, and celebrity/influencer culture. After they finish, they might read what history books say about the 1990s, or chat with adults who lived through that decade, and see if their perspective (based on the media of the times) and the historical reality align.ĮVALUATE MEDIA-SHAPED PERCEPTIONS OF BEAUTY. Let them provide their own perceptions, rather than being informed by history books and older family members. We then want them to portray the tone and tenor of the times by synthesizing the most relevant and compelling pieces into a single product. After reviewing all of these social artifacts, certain themes and patterns will rise to the top. This content might include political ads, music videos, celebrity news, public service announcements, and more. For instance, you might have them watch video clips and read stories about the 1990s. Have students create a poster, infographic, or set of memes for a specific decade by using information found online. The activity shows how crucial certain elements of a story are, and how they color our perceptions of what happened. Ask them again to reflect on the article and determine if and how their perception of what happened changed. Once done, provide them with the original article inclusive of all of the details you removed. Then, have students read the redacted article and write out their reflections, opinions, and ideas as to what was redacted. For instance, you might mark out the date, times, and locations, as well as the names, race, gender, whether they are a celebrity or another public personality, and any other identifying elements. Grab a recent online article that students would find interesting and relevant, and blackout key facts in the article before presenting it to them.
